Following the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin bin Ayub, an Amanah MP and former minister of domestic trade and costs of living who sat with the PH-BN "unity government" in parliament, voters in the state assembly district of Simpang Jeram (Muar) and the parliamentary district of Pulai (Johor Bahru Area) will go to the polls today (9 Sept.).

History | Sejarah

Pulai is a federal constituency in Johor Bahru District, Johor, Malaysia, that has been represented in the Dewan Rakyat since 1974. The federal constituency was created in the 1974 redistribution and is mandated to return a single member to the Dewan Rakyat under the first-past-the post voting system.

The BN political coalition dominated the Pulai constituency from its inception in 1974 until it was defeated in the 2018 election by the PH coalition. The BN coalition's long-standing dominance in the Pulai constituency had significant implications for the local political landscape. For decades, the constituency had consistently returned BN candidates to the Dewan Rakyat. However, the defeat of the BN coalition in the 2018 election marked a major shift in power, signalling a potential change in the political dynamics of the constituency and the broader region.

Simpang Jeram is a state constituency that has a representative in the Johor State Legislative Assembly. Under the first-past-the-post voting procedure, the state constituency was first put up for the 2018 election and is required to elect one Assemblyman to the Johor State Legislative Assembly.

The process of choosing candidates, and whether the voters choose a "heavyweight" or a fresh, forward-thinking candidate who can successfully carry out duties in the area, will be a key factor in the outcome.
